Choosing the right video format
There’s a wide variety of devices out there which are capable of video playback – computers, music players, mobile phones, game consoles, you name it. However, all of them support a different set of formats and there’s no combination to catch them all. So if you want to generate a video, you will always have to pick a format based on a selection of devices that are important to you. To make this a little bit easier, I prepared a little tool for you:
The tool is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a single HTML file and everything is done in pure HTML, CSS and JavaScript, so you can just download or save it with your browser and it remains functional.
Note that the selection of devices and formats presented in the Decision Helper is pretty small and incomplete. If you have any suggestions or corrections, mail them to me or post them here.
Hi Martin,
On you Video Format Decision Helper page you recommend CCCP as the best universal codec package for PC. In what respect is it better than ffmpeg?
Cheers,
Wini
I didn’t say that CCCP ist the best codec pack – it’s just the most popular one :) It does not only contain a (mildly outdated, but still sufficient) version of ffshow-tryouts, but also Haali Media Splitter, MPC-HC and some other goodies. At least Haali Media Splitter is required to make ffdshow really useful for modern video content, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to play Matroska videos (or even MP4 on Windows versions before 6.1).
